Open call for the selection of contemporary drawing projects for the Drawing Room Lisboa 2023 fair

1. Purpose of the call

The Institute of Balearic Studies, together with the organizers of the Drawing Room Lisboa 2023 art fair, creates an open call for the selection of a maximum of three contemporary drawing art projects for the stand of the Institute of Balearic Studies at Drawing Room Lisbon 2023, which is held from October 25 to 29, 2023 at the Sociedad Nacional de Belas Artes in Lisbon, Portugal.

2. Description and objective of the project

The Institute of Balearic Studies (IEB) is a public organization of the Regional Government of the Balearic Islands dedicated to promoting the language and culture of the Balearic Islands. Through its culture area, its strategic objectives are to consolidate the Balearic Islands as a structured cultural market, as well as to promote the external projection of music, performing arts, literature and the visual arts of the Balearic Islands.

In order to promote and give visibility to artistic creation in the field of visual arts in the Balearic Islands, the IEB organizes a Balearic focus at the Drawing Room Lisboa 2023 contemporary drawing fair, where a maximum of three drawing projects of Balearic artists are shown.

The project is curated by João Silvério, an independent Portuguese curator, creator of the Empty Cube project and associate curator of the PLMJ Foundation's contemporary art collection.

The exhibition space of the focus of the Balearic Islands is distributed in two stands of 10 m² (5 x 2 meters) and an area with 9 linear meters of wall.

The IEB's Balearic focus at the Drawing Room Lisboa 2023 fair is conceived as a project to promote Balearic artistic creation, with no commercial aim or activity.

3. Management and technical coordination

The IEB is in charge of the organization and management of the project, which includes contracting suppliers and budget control and supervision.

4. Recipients

This call is addressed to artists natural from the Balearic Islands or residents of the archipelago.

5. Presentation of projects

To participate in the call, it is necessary for artists to submit a dossier with a contemporary drawing portfolio (narrative, abstract, performative, digital, instaurative, etc.) and an up-to-date professional trajectory.

The dossier must be accompanied by an email with a brief presentation text and the scanned ID or passport. It must be presented in a single low-resolution PDF file (identified with the name and surname of the artist), attached to the email.

The dossier can be presented in Catalan, Spanish or English. If necessary, it must be accompanied by instructions regarding assembly or any technical specificity to be taken into account in relation to the works.

The works included in the exhibition must be produced. If necessary, a budget item is provided for the framing of the works or similar.

6. Submission of projects

Projects must be sent to the IEB email address opencall@iebalearics.org, indicating in the message "Registration Open call Drawing Room Lisboa 2023". The IEB will confirm receipt of the registration in the call.

7. Deadline for receipt

The deadline for receiving projects ends on September 3, 2023, at 11:00 p.m. Any application for participation sent after the established deadline will not be considered.

8. Selection criteria

The selection criteria will take into account:

• The adaptation of the project to the conceptual framework of the Drawing Room Lisboa fair – max. 5 points.

• The excellence, quality and rigor of the project – max. 10 points.

• The international promotion potential of the participating artist – max. 5 points.

• The technical and economic feasibility of the project – max. 5 points.

The maximum score that can be obtained is 25 points.

9. Project selection committee

The selection of the participating projects in the Balearic focus on contemporary drawing corresponds to a selection committee made up of João Silvério, curator of the project; Mónica Álvarez Careaga, director of the Drawing Room Lisbon art fair; and Karen Müller, head of the IEB's area of visual arts.

If necessary, the IEB will organize an online or face-to-face portfolio review of the projects presented.

The decision of the selection committee will be final.

10. Fees of selected artists

A total amount of €2,100.00 (taxes included) corresponding to artists' fees is stipulated, an amount that is prorated among the participating artists.

The fees cover the preparation of the project and the non-exclusive assignment of the reproduction and communication rights of the works.

The payment of the fees will be made against invoice at the end of the Drawing Room Lisbon 2023 edition.

11. Travel to the fair

The IEB offers the participating artists to cover travel expenses and a three-day stay at the fair (includes one day for assembly).

12. Resolution

The selected artists will receive an email confirming their selection from the IEB (until, at the latest, September 8, 2023), to which they will have to respond confirming their participation.

Once this procedure is resolved, the IEB will inform all participants of the final result by email and will publish the result of the final selection on its web pages.
