Open call for the selection of a visual arts project for the ARTESANTANDER 2025 fair

1. Purpose of the call

The Institute of Balearic Studies (IEB), together with the organizers of the ARTESANTANDER 2025 fair, is launching an open call for the selection of a visual arts project in solo format for the IEB stand at the ARTESANTANDER contemporary art fair, to be held from July 11 to 15, 2025, at the Santander Conference and Exhibition Center.

2. Description and objective of the project

The IEB is an agency of the Government of the Balearic Islands dedicated to promoting the language and culture of the Balearic Islands.

Through its cultural department, its strategic objectives are to consolidate the Balearic Islands as a structured cultural market, as well as to promote the international projection of the archipelago's music, performing arts, literature, and visual arts.

To promote and give visibility to artistic creation in the field of visual arts in the Balearic Islands, the IEB is participating in the ARTESANTANDER 2025 contemporary art fair, where a solo project by a Balearic artist will be shown.

The project is accompanied by a short promotional publication with information about the exhibition proposal and the participating artist's career.

The IEB's exhibition project at the ARTESANTANDER 2025 fair is conceived as a project to promote Balearic artistic creation, with no commercial activity or objectives.

3. Booth

The IEB booth is 20 m² and U-shaped.

4. Management and Technical Coordination

The IEB will be responsible for the organization and management of the project, which includes the contracting of suppliers and budget control and supervision.

5. Recipients

This call is aimed at artists and art curators.

Artists must be natives of the Balearic Islands or residents of the archipelago.

Curators must have led relevant projects in the field of curatorial programming in spaces for the dissemination of contemporary art, either Spanish or international.

6. Project Presentation

To participate in the call, the artist or curator must submit a dossier with a proposed exhibition project.

The dossier must include the professional background of the artist and, where applicable, the curator. It must be presented in a single, low-resolution PDF file (identified with the artist's or curator's first and last name), attached to an email. The email must also include a brief introductory text and a scanned ID or passport.

The dossier may be written in Catalan or Spanish.

If necessary, it must be accompanied by installation instructions or any technical specifications to be taken into account regarding the works.

The works included in the exhibition must be produced. A budget of up to €1,000 is allocated for framing or similar works.

Only one project proposal per participant will be accepted.

7. Submission of Projects

Projects must be sent to the IEB email address opencall@iebalearics.org, with the subject line "Open Call Registration: Project for ARTESANTANDER 2025."

The IEB will confirm receipt of the registration for the call.

8. Deadline for Submission of Projects

The deadline for submitting projects is May 25, 2025, at 11:00 p.m. Any applications submitted after this deadline will not be considered.

9. Selection Criteria

The selection criteria will take into account the following:

• The suitability of the project within the conceptual framework of the fair: up to 10 points.

• The excellence, quality, and rigor of the project: up to 10 points.

• The participating artist's promotional potential: up to 5 points.

The maximum score is 25 points.

10. Selection Committee

A selection committee will be responsible for selecting the winning project. It will be composed of Mónica Álvarez Careaga, fair director; Jan-Philipp Fruehsorge, member of the fair's Selection Committee; Karen Müller, visual arts technician at the IEB; and Llorenç Perelló Rosselló, director of the IEB.

The decision of the Selection Committee for this call will be final.

11. Fees

The fees of the artist and curator are set at €2,000 (tax included), respectively.

The fees cover the preparation of the project and the non-exclusive transfer of reproduction and communication rights.

The fees do not include travel and accommodation expenses, which will be managed and covered by the IEB.

Payment of fees will be made against an invoice at the end of ARTESANTANDER 2025.

12. Travel to the Fair

The IEB will cover the participating artist and curator's travel expenses and three days of stay at the fair (including one day for set-up).

13. Resolution

The artist or curator of the winning project will receive an email from the IEB informing them that they have been selected and must respond to this email accepting the exhibition commission. Once this process is completed, the IEB will inform all participants of the final result by email and will also publish it on its website.
